I was literally surrounded by mobs within a 3 level range when I manually walked to the waypoint and started it so I'm guessing it is either not picking them up correctly, or is 3 levels difference more than it looks for? Would you like the mob name to test it out? I can look it up next time I'm at my gaming pc.
