I just did cancer at 27 as a gld and got gold. It doesnt matter if you die to the adds because you still get credit for your damage to them. Once again, if you cant gold it, your profile or skills may need editing

If you were in a group, that's why - the group got gold not you, you just share the reward.
If you solo fate grinded (outside of a group) you wont get full credit for dying to an add.
